Tosca

MARQUEE FARMS

WEIMARANERS

OF

NORTHERN VIRGINIA

I purchased my first Weimaraner, "Tosca," from a local breeder in the Northern VA area. Although I always had a dog while growing up, Tosca was my first "show"dog.  At first, I wasn’t sure how interested I would be in the whole conformation arena, but I decided to give it a try and to see what we were capable of.  At the time, I was told that my puppy was the last pick of the litter, so I didn’t know what, if anything, she would do in the show ring... and I didn’t really care.  First and foremost she was my beloved pet.  Anything beyond that would be icing on the cake.  As luck would have it, she surprised everyone by excelling in both the conformation and obedience rings.  And she’s still the best pet, ever.

Tosca, born in April 1996, is a medium-sized Weim, sleek and slender, true to type and style, with a very "noble" head.  (Looking back through some very old pictures of Weims, I came across a picture of a female head that looked just like my little one’s.  The caption on the picture read: "This is a very noble head for a bitch.") She has a very fluid gait with excellent reach and drive.  Tosca pointed from the puppy classes and received a Best of Breed and her first group placement from the 12-18 month class.  She received her Championship by going Winners Bitch, Best of Winners, and Best of Breed from the open class in February 1998, beating 55 other dogs including 9 specials.  Tosca was shown as a special for about four months after that.  She finished 1998 — after being on the top ten for a time — ranked 18th in the country.

Training for the conformation ring came very easily for her, so thanks to her natural ability and the help of a great teacher (thank you, Lisa Knock), I was able to learn how to handle her in the show ring.  We both enjoyed this very much... I think myself more than her because I have subsequently started showing other dogs and other breeds.

With Tosca the "bug" bit, and as a result I have become very interested and involved in our breed.  Although we are a very young kennel I have big dreams for it and my new line of Weimaraners.

How did I come up with my kennel name?  My first dog was Tosca, named after the opera... operas are advertised on a Marquee...thus "Marquee Farms."
